The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a closed-loop kinetic chain exercise program for elderly women with individual exercise equipment on physical fitness, fall prevention self-efficacy, and physiological markers for stress. 28 elderly females above the age of 65 were subjects for this study. Over an eight week period, both groups performed exercise 3 times a week for 60 minutes per session. 15 women in the experimental group utilized personal exercise equipment, while 13 women in the control group performed the same movements without the exercise equipment. Left grip strength increased significantly by 6% for the experimental group.
Upper and lower extremity endurance increased significantly by 47% and 76% respectively for the experimental group. There was no significant increase in cardiovascular endurance for either group. There were no significant decreases in resting heart rate and blood pressure. Flexibility increased significantly by 21.7% for the experimental group. The balance of the experimental group significantly increased by 20%. The experimental group¡¯s coordination also significantly improved by 23%. There were no significant decreases for any body composition variable (height, weight, fat mass, muscle mass, and body fat percentage) for either group.
In the experimental group, fall prevention self efficacy significantly increased by 24%. Saliva cortisol levels decreased significantly by 54% respectively for the experimental group.
